Sort Now isn't working: fixing the "Error occurred while sorting" message

What to check when Sort Now fails, keeps loading, or shows an error.

Written by David Farrington

If clicking Sort Now shows an error, keeps loading, or doesn't change your collection, it's almost always one of a few things. Work through the checklist below.

1. Make sure a sort type is selected

Every collection needs a sort type before it can be sorted. If you see a prompt to select a sort type, choose one (for example "Best Selling" or "Revenue") and save again. See Sort Types for the full list.

2. A sort is already running

If you see "Already sorting collections now, please try after some time", a sort for your store is still in progress. Wait a couple of minutes and try again. Avoid clicking Sort Now repeatedly — each click queues more work and can slow things down.

3. Another bulk job is running on your store

Ouiteo applies the new order using Shopify's bulk tools. If another large operation is running — a big data sync, or a bulk action from another app — Shopify only allows one at a time, so the reorder is skipped until it finishes. Wait a few minutes and run Sort Now again.

4. Large collections take longer

Very large collections take more time to sort, and on occasion a run can time out. If it does, simply run Sort Now again. Changes can also take a few minutes to appear on your storefront after a successful sort.

5. The order saved in Ouiteo but doesn't show on your store

If the app shows the correct order but your storefront doesn't match, that's a separate issue — usually the collection's sort order in Shopify. Ouiteo sets this to Manual automatically, but if Shopify rejects it the new order won't apply. Re-run Sort Now, and see Sort Types and our guide on storefront order mismatches.

Still stuck?

If the error persists after these steps, contact us via live chat or at help@ouiteo.com and include a link to the collection you're trying to sort — that helps us diagnose it quickly.
